What to Consider When Planning a Bathroom Remodel or Renovation
September 2008
A bathroom remodel can be a complex undertaking, as the bathroom is often the smallest room in your house, yet plays such a critical function. When thinking about a remodel, think about what you want to do in the following areas.
Functionality
Think about the current drawbacks of your bathroom and the best way to address these. Do you need to be able to have two people in the bathroom at the same time? Are items conveniently located? Is there ample storage? Consider beginning your remodel with a floor plan of the existing space. This allows you to identify all the necessary items and provides a starting point for discussing the project with your contractor.
Location of Pipes and Water
Indicate on your plan where the pipes and water supply are located. If you plan to move pipes your contractor needs to know up front. Leaving the existing plumbing will allow more of your budget to go into upgrading storage and fixtures.
Outlets and Switches
Are the current outlets and switches adequate? Existing electrical should be noted on your plan. It is easier to move outlets, switches and even heating ducts than to move plumbing.
Bathroom Fixtures
Consider whether to update the tub, shower, toilet and faucets or whether to use what’s there. Tubs, showers and toilets are a fairly significant investment and may be worth keeping if the existing ones are in good shape.
Lighting
Upgrading the lighting in your bathroom can make it much more functional and attractive. Also, it’s relatively simple to move wiring for new lighting.
Materials
Maintenance plays a big part in material selection. Make sure materials you select are water resistant and can be easily cleaned. This will keep your bathroom looking fresh and new.
Water Conservation
The bathroom is one of the highest areas of water consumption in your home. Consider installing a low-flow toilet and shower head to keep water usage down.
Begin with a comprehensive
layout that indicates where key elements are, and design from there.
Your contractor will be able to work
around the
existing fixtures, maximizing your investment in your new bathroom.
