What to Consider When Remodeling a Kitchen
September, 2008
Since the kitchen is the heart of the home, a kitchen remodel can be a complex and even emotional undertaking. When thinking about a kitchen remodel or renovation, consider the following.
Functionality
Think about the current drawbacks of your kitchen and the best way to address these. Often you have multiple people in the kitchen. Does it flow well and are appliances conveniently located? Is there enough storage and is it easy to use? Begin your kitchen remodel with one of the six basic layouts. This allows you to identify all the necessary items and provides a starting point for discussing the project with your contractor.
Appliances
This is one of the major functionality issues to consider. There are many types of appliances to fit your preferences and space needs.
- Refrigerators now come in many styles, including side-by-side, top freezer and bottom freezer. You can even get separate refrigeration and freezer units. And, newer top- and bottom-mount freezer units have ice and water in the door, so you no longer have to get a side-by-side for this convenience.
- There are myriad options for cooking appliances. Think beyond the stand-alone range you may be used to. Cook tops and wall-mount ovens can be located in different areas of the kitchen, providing flexibility, especially in smaller kitchens. Double wall ovens can increase your cooking space without requiring any more space than a range. And microwave/hood combinations will get you a nice, large microwave without giving up valuable counter space.
- Newer dishwashers have innovative interior design to handle larger loads. If you run frequent, smaller loads you may even consider one of the new drawer dishwashers or in-sink dishwashers.
- Other appliances. There are many other appliances you might want to install in your new kitchen. These range from refrigerator drawers to stand-alone ice makers to wine coolers.
Cabinets
The working and living space in your kitchen is dictated in large part by the counter and cabinet space. Often during a kitchen remodel you replace the cabinets. However, if you like your current configuration, give some thought to refacing the existing cabinets. You can get a whole new look to the kitchen without a tear-out by simply replacing the doors and hardware.
If you’re planning to tear out the old cabinets and install new, work with your contractor to understand the many cabinet and door styles available, especially for maximizing space in corners. Your contractor will work with you to develop a plan that will utilize your existing space much more efficiently.
Countertops
Since the counters are a focal point of the kitchen, give careful consideration to the look and material as well as the functionality. There are many options for couter tops, from laminate to tile to stone, and each will give your kitchen a distinct look. Your contactor can provide examples and guidance that will help you select the perfect combination of color, pattern and material.
Light Fixtures
Upgrading the lighting in your kitchen can make it much more functional and attractive. In addition to fixtures, consider adding less direct lighting like recessed lighting and under-counter lighting. Remember to maintain good direct lighting in key work areas.
Materials and Maintenance
Maintenance plays a big part in material selection. Make sure the materials you select are water resistant and can be easily cleaned. This will keep your kitchen looking clean and new for years to come.
Energy and Water Conservation
Appliances are a major user of energy and water in the home. If yours are more than 10 years old you may want to consider replacing them. Newer energy-efficient appliances use far less energy and water, resulting in lower utility bills. Look for ENERGY STAR® appliances and review the EnergyGuide label before purchasing new appliances.
A kitchen remodel should be fun and result in a kitchen that is beautiful as well as functional. Whether you’re planning a complete redesign or a face-lift, your contractor can help you plan and build the perfect kitchen.
